Liturgical Dance according to GAYLE B. HEISKELL, M.D.

Taking the words of God’s Holy Book, the inspirations from a sermon, the reflections of a poem, the lyrics of a hymn or song, and forming a fluid movement of praise. It can be via the solitude of a soloist, the togetherness of a duet, the contrast of a trio, the balanced evenness of a quartet, or the continuum of an entire harmonious troupe. We express human emotion from the slowest, quietest reverence, to the most spirit-filled excitement of celebration to the solemnity of sorrow to the urgency of desperation to the individuality of life’s experiences to the appreciation of the beauty of our Creator to the love of God through Jesus Christ, and share it with all people with the authority and certainty of the truth of our God, who is Love, Hope, and Divine Grace.

 OVERVIEW

The purpose of the Dance Ministry of the Metropolitan Church of God is to express praise and worship through the form of liturgical dance. We seek to combine the art of movement which evokes the body, mind, and spirit in an effort to connect with God. Through our dance, we aim to touch someone’s heart and have other’s feel the energy and wonder of glorifying the Lord.

 BACKGOUND

  • What is Liturgical Dance?

As defined in “Introducing Dance in Christian Worship” by R.E. VerEecke, S.J., the word “liturgy”, from its root meaning, is “something people do together.” It is a common action with an expressed purpose. In a religious context, the word signifies people who come together (the assembly) to give expression to their faith in specific actions, using signs and symbols that are “meaningful.”

  • Purposes of Liturgical Dance
    • Glorify God
    • Praise and Worship Him with Greater Depth of Spirit
    • Serve as a Powerful Spiritual weapon
    • Bring forth spiritual and physical life
    • Be prophetic in expressing God’s will to his people

Rehearsals are typically 2-3 times per/month or more in preparation for worship. Dance apparel is provided unless otherwise indicated. Some formal dance training is highly preferred but not required.
